Mahaiula Beach

Mahaiula Beach is a perfect spot to get way from the crowds.

Located just north of Kekaha Kai State Park in Kona, Hawaii, is Mahaiula Bay. This small stretch of beach is home to sandy beaches, and great snorkeling. In the winter months, there is a very nice surf break that provides a nice long right hander that can peel almost 100 yards into the middle of the bay. The vibe here is very mellow and usually not very crowded, even during the busy summer months. There are tons of wild goats that roam around the lava feild behind the beach.. Don’t worry, they won’t chase you.

Getting into Kekaha Kai State Park can be a little tricky. It is not recommended that you take small cars with a low clearance down this road do to its rugged terrain. Many visitors have torn their oil pans while driving down this road causing severe damage to their rental cars. Parking is usually not a problem, however it is limited. To get to Mahaiula Beach, you must park at the Kekaha Kai State Park and walk about 10 minutes north to the beach. There are porta-potties located here but no shower facilities. Please be respectful to the local families down here and remember to clean up after your selves.
