KAHALU’U BEACH PARK

KAHALU’U BAY
Kahalu’u Beach Park is revered as one of the best spots for snorkeling and surfing in Kona, Hawaii. This easy access snorkeling spot is home to one of the largest collections of diverse tropical fish on the Big Island of Hawaii. It is not uncommon for snorkelers to see rainbow parrot fish, bright yellow tang, moray eels and even green sea turtles, which often frequent the protected waters of Kahalu’u Bay.

Kahalu’u Bay is a popular surf spot for local and beginner surfers. There are several different areas to catch a wave depending on your skill level. This is an excellent spot on the Big Island to learn how to surf. When the surf is high, Kahalu’u can have very strong rip currents that pull north into a rocky shoreline. If you are a beginner or novice surfer, make sure you talk to one of our professional staff members or a lifeguard about the day’s conditions before paddling out. We recommend taking a surf lesson with us if you want to surf on a big day at Kahalu’u.

Parking at Kahaluu can be tricky on a busy day here. There is a public parking lot located south of Kahalu’u Bay Beach Park on the mauka (mountain side) of the road. There are showers, public rest rooms, picnic tables and grills located on the south end of the bay next to the lifeguard station, which posts guards up from 9am to 5pm.

Kahalu’u Bay is located at the south end of Ali’i Drive near mile marker 5. Most people look for St. Peters Catholic Church, a small blue and white chapel, located at the north end of the bay.
