Is Surfing Safe?

Surfing is inherently dangerous due to unpredictable ocean conditions and the physical demands of the sport. Taking a professional surf lesson can significantly minimize the risk of injury. Surf instructors teach essential safety protocols that can help build awareness and confidence in the water. By learning the fundamentals of surfing through a series of lessons, surfers can better navigate hazards, learn to respect ocean currents and improve their overall safety and enjoyment of the sport.

What is a Liability Release Waiver?

When you sign up for your surf lesson online, you will be emailed a digital copy of our Liability Release Waiver. This proactive measure allows you to review and familiarize yourself with the associated risks involved with surfing prior to your arrival. All surf lesson participants will be required to read and sign this waiver before the start of the surf lesson. Participants under the age of 18 will need a parent or legal guardians consent.

What is Surfers Myelopathy?

Surfer’s Myelopathy is an acute syndrome characterized by nontraumatic paraparesis or paraplegia. While it is often times associated with first-time surfers, it can also occur in activities involving hyperextension of the back such as gymnastics, yoga and Pilates. If you experience any pain or discomfort during your lesson, we strongly encourage you to inform your instructors. Your safety and well-being are our top priorities and we are here to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable experience.

What should I (my child) bring to a surf lesson?

All surfers should bring a swimsuit and towel. Kahalu’u Bay Surf and Sea recommends that you apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes prior to entering the water.

How early should I show up for a surf lesson?

It is a good idea to show up at least 10 minutes prior to your surf lesson. Upon arrival you will be required to read and sign and Activity Release Wavier if you have not already done so online.

Can I bring my own surfboard, rash guard or booties?

Kahalu’u Bay Surf and Sea provides all surfers with soft top long boards, rash guards and booties. If you are taking a private lesson you are more than welcome to bring your own board.

Where do surf lessons take place?

Private, semi-private and group lessons are held in Kahalu’u Bay which is conveniently located across the street from Kahalu’u Bay Surf and Sea.

Should I have any prior surfing experience before attending class?

No shoes, No shirt, No experience…No problem. However, knowing how to swim is a must. If you are not a strong swimmer please let your instructors know and we would be happy to provide you with a life-jacket.

Can you accommodate large groups or corporate events?

We have the staff, equipment and location to accommodate large group surf lessons. Give us a call and we would be happy to help you set up your next big event!
